The Texas Rangers signed free-agent SS Yenci Pena (Braves) Saturday, Dec. 9. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. Pena had been declared a free agent by Major League Baseball after it was determined that the Atlanta Braves had violated rules in signing him.

Former Atlanta Braves general manager John Coppolella has been permanently banned from MLB for violating rules in the international market, commissioner Rob Manfred announced Tuesday, Nov. 21. Additionally, rights to 13 internation prospects must be forfeited, including highly regarded prospect SS Kevin Maitan. Maitan had signed a $4.25 million deal with the Braves last year. The other 12 prospects forfeited are as follows: Juan Contreras, Yefri del Rosario, Abrahan Gutierrez, Juan Carlos Negret, Yenci Pena, Yunior Severino, Livan Soto, Guillermo Zuniga, Brandol Mezquita, Angel Rojas, Antonio Sucre and Ji Hwan Bae. These players will become free agents and are eligible to sign with any team. Finally, former special assistant Gordon Blakeley will be suspended one year and will not be allowed to work for any team during that time.
