Mariners | Joaquin Benoit's struggles continue

Fri, 01 Jul 2016 17:45:17 -0700

Seattle Mariners RP Joaquin Benoit could lose his job as the club's primary setup man, after allowing eight earned runs in 8 2/3 innings over his last nine appearances, giving him a 5.30 ERA for the season. "Sometimes, his shoulder doesn't bounce back," manager Scott Servais said. "But it's probably more of a mechanical, release-point, timing issue. To see him miss the strike zone as much as he's missed it by, that's very un-normal. That's not him." Servais added that Benoit claimed his arm felt fine during his outing against the Baltimore Orioles Thursday, June 30, even though there have been several recent occasions where he was unavailable to pitch. RP Edwin Diaz is the most likely candidate to take over the role, although RPs Tom Wilhelmsen and Nathan Karns are also expected to be placed under consideration.

Fantasy Tip: Diaz has posted a 2.03 ERA in 12 appearances since joining the parent club last month, with 23 strikeouts over 13 1/3 innings. The 22-year-old rookie right-hander should be owned in AL-only fantasy leagues and in other formats which value the holds category. Wilhelmsen and Karns aren't worth rostering outside of deep AL-only leagues.

Mariners | Seattle expected to call up Edwin Diaz

Sat, 04 Jun 2016 12:42:18 -0700

Seattle Mariners RP Edwin Diaz will reportedly have his contract selected from Class AA Jackson and be available to the team if needed against the Texas Rangers on Saturday, June 04. RP Cody Martin will be sent down to Class AAA Tacoma in a corresponding move.

Fantasy Tip: Diaz was named Seattle's minor-league starting pitcher of the year in 2014 and 2015 before the organization asked him to convert to a reliever. The 22-year-old Puerto Rican has been dynamic out of the bullpen, allowing one unearned run while striking out 16 over 11 2/3 frames. He's probably not going to challenge Steve Cishek for the closer's role anytime soon, but his power arm figures to be a nice fit for owners in leagues that value holds.

Mariners | Edwin Diaz converting to reliever

Wed, 11 May 2016 06:46:43 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP Edwin Diaz, the team's top pitching prospect, is being converted to a reliever and could help the Mariners later this season, according to general manager Jerry Dipoto.

Fantasy Tip: Diaz is 2-3 with a 3.00 ERA, a 1.13 WHIP and 40 K's in 30 innings at Class AA Jacksonville. Diaz could be a wipeout reliever, and he's a name to watch if you need K's and ratio help later in the year.
