Pirates | Juan Nicasio placed on restricted list

Sun, 19 Jun 2016 07:16:51 -0700

The Pittsburgh Pirates have placed SP Juan Nicasio on the restricted list so that he can return to the Dominican Republic to take care of a family matter. The team is likely to call up SP Wilfredo Boscan from Class AAA Indianapolis to start in his place Tuesday, June 21, against the San Francisco Giants. In other moves, the Pirates recalled RPs Curtis Partch and Jorge Rondon and INF Jason Rogers from Indianapolis, while designating RP Cory Luebke for assignment and optioning RP Rob Scahill to Indianapolis.

Fantasy Tip: Nicasio is 5-6 with a 5.83 ERA through 13 appearances (12 starts) this season, with 27 walks and 65 strikeouts through 63 1/3 innings. Despite the high strikeout totals, the 29-year-old right-hander is in jeopardy of being demoted to the bullpen soon because of his struggles facing batters during the second and third times through the batting order. Boscan is 1-0 with a 2.92 ERA in five relief appearances at the MLB level this season but would make a risky play in DFS Tuesday.

Pirates | Jung Ho Kang set for season debut?

Thu, 05 May 2016 15:24:12 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates SS Jung Ho Kang (knee) could be activated from the disabled list and make his season debut during the series against the St. Louis Cardinals beginning Friday, May 6. 1B Jason Rogers was optioned to Class AAA Indianapolis, and a corresponding move has not yet been announced.

Fantasy Tip: A return Friday would fit the original timeline for Kang's season debut, and without a corresponding move to Rogers' demotion, Kang is likely to suit up this weekend. Kang should be owned in all seasonal leagues after posting a .315/.378/.553 slash line with 38 runs, 11 home runs and 33 RBI over his final 60 games of 2015.

Pirates | John Jaso sitting vs. lefty

Tue, 26 Apr 2016 14:11:14 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates 1B John Jaso is not in the starting lineup against Colorado Rockies left-handed SP Jorge De La Rosa Tuesday, April 26. 1B Jason Rogers is at first base and is hitting sixth. Also, SS Jordy Mercer moves up to the leadoff position.

Fantasy Tip: Rogers has a bit of power but has only four career long balls, and they all came last season. He's a desperation source of salary cap relief in DFS play. Mercer is more known for his glove but does carry a .300 early-season average. He's facing a pitcher that can yield plenty of hits, too, so he could be worth a sleeper selection tonight atop the order.

Pirates | Pittsburgh resting right side of infield

Sun, 24 Apr 2016 12:48:21 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates 1B John Jaso and 2B Josh Harrison are not in the lineup Sunday, April 24, against Arizona Diamondbacks SP Robbie Ray. SS Jordy Mercer will replace Jaso in the leadoff spot while 1B Jason Rogers will occupy first base and bat fifth. INF Sean Rodriguez will slide over to second base and hit sixth.

Fantasy Tip: It's a rest day for Jaso and Harrison, each of whom are hitting well over .300. Mercer is 8-for-15 with a homer in the four games he has played during the Pirates' 10-game West Coast road trip and is a sensible low-cost option in DFS. Rodriguez has homered in each of the first two games of this series and appears to be in the middle of one of his patented power binges, making him a fine short-term pickup.

Pirates | John Jaso, David Freese sitting out

Fri, 22 Apr 2016 15:26:34 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates 1B John Jaso and 3B David Freese are not in the starting lineup Friday, April 22. 1B Jason Rogers is starting at first base and is hitting sixth, while 1B Sean Rodriguez starts at third and is batting seventh against Arizona Diamondbacks SP Patrick Corbin. Also, SS Jordy Mercer moves to the leadoff spot and OF Gregory Polanco drops to eighth in the order.

Fantasy Tip: Rogers and Rodriguez don't move the needle all that much in daily fantasy leagues hitting near the bottom of the order. But they are facing a lefty in a positive hitting environment. Mercer has a little more intrigue as a low-end shortstop play, while Polanco loses some luster in daily formats against the southpaw.
