Reds | Tony Cingrani used in the eighth

Sat, 11 Jun 2016 19:28:17 -0700

Cincinnati Reds RP Tony Cingrani pitched a perfect eighth inning against the Oakland Athletics Saturday, June 11, and RP Ross Ohlendorf picked up the save.

Fantasy Tip: Cingrani has been Cincinnati's closer, albeit a shaky one, and it remains to be seen if Ohlendorf will see more chances going forward. Hang on to Cingrani for now, and add Ohlendorf to the list of potential adds if you are desperate for saves.

Reds | Ross Ohlendorf closes it out

Sat, 11 Jun 2016 16:16:51 -0700

Cincinnati Reds RP Ross Ohlendorf allowed two hits Saturday, June 11, but he closed out a 2-1 victory against the Oakland Athletics for the save.

Fantasy Tip: Tony Cingrani had pitched three out of the last four days, and he may have been unavailable. Ohlendorf's peripherals aren't great, but he's fanning a batter per inning. Cingrani is sitting on a 4.08 ERA and a 1.40 WHIP, and he is a left-hander. Ohlendorf could usurp him, and he's worth speculating on in NL-only leagues.

Reds | Ross Ohlendorf suspended three games

Fri, 13 May 2016 12:30:08 -0700

Cincinnati Reds RP Ross Ohlendorf received a three-game suspension Friday, May 13, after he threw at Pittsburgh Pirates 3B David Freese with warnings in place during the game Wednesday, May 11.

Fantasy Tip: Ohlendorf was popping up in the closer conversation, but he has 11 runs allowed through 16 2/3, so there isn't a lot to like about his fantasy stock. He shouldn't be owned as anything more than a desperation saves candidate in cavernous mixed and NL-only leagues.

Reds | Ross Ohlendorf next in line for saves?

Wed, 04 May 2016 16:14:20 -0700

Cincinnati Reds RP Ross Ohlendorf pitched the final inning of a 7-4 win over the San Francisco Giants in the ninth inning Wednesday, May 4. However, Ohlendorf allowed two hits and an earned run while striking out one but wasn't awarded a save.

Fantasy Tip: Even though it wasn't a traditional save opportunity, it's notable because Ohlendorf was tasked with finishing the game after Tony Cingrani pitched the eighth. Caleb Cotham and J.J. Hoover have been terrible for a bullpen that has allowed a run in an MLB record-worst 22 straight games. Cingrani and/or Ohlendorf could be next in line for ninth-inning work if you're brave and desperate enough to mess with this shaky situation in Cincy.

Reds | Ross Ohlendorf signed

Sat, 26 Mar 2016 10:39:05 -0700

The Cincinnati Reds have signed free-agent RP Ross Ohlendorf (Royals) to a one-year contract.

Fantasy Tip: Although Ohlendorf has prior starting experience, Cincinnati is expected to use him as a middle reliever, so he has no fantasy value. The 33-year-old right-hander was 3-1 with a 3.72 ERA in 21 appearances for the Texas Rangers in 2015.

Rangers | Trio of players set to join big club

Mon, 31 Aug 2015 18:23:23 -0700

The Texas Rangers will recall Ps Luke Jackson, Ross Ohlendorf and OF Drew Stubbs from Class AAA Round Rock Tuesday, Sept. 1.

Fantasy Tip: Stubbs is a shell of his former self, but if he is able to draw a start or two down the stretch he could be a low-end source of power in FantasyScore. The pitchers can mostly be ignored for fantasy purposes.

Rangers | Texas to play matchups with bullpen

Mon, 18 May 2015 11:46:07 -0700

Texas Rangers RP Shawn Tolleson was used in the ninth inning in a non-save situation, and Texas relievers retired 12 of the final 13 hitters they faced in the win over the Cleveland Indians. Manager Jeff Banister said after the game that none of the previous bullpen roles will be followed. "I talked to those guys this morning collectively and individually and told them, that as we stand now, nobody has a specific role," Banister said. "We will find the best match for this club one inning at a time. We will treat it that way for now and see where it goes." RPs Ross Ohlendorf and Tanner Scheppers were used in innings six through eight Sunday with RP Neftali Feliz struggling. The Rangers planned to stick with Tolleson in the ninth if the save situation would have been in place. Feliz blew his third save of the season Saturday, May 16, and Texas has blown five saves before the ninth inning this year.

Fantasy Tip: If you're hurting for saves, Tolleson should be the immediate addition off the waiver wire while the Rangers experiment with their late-inning bullpen roles. Feliz could still see save chances here and there, so he's worth hanging onto. Scheppers could also figure into the ninth inning and might be worth speculating on in deep mixed and AL-only leagues. Until we see a clearer picture in Texas, though, this situation could be messy and frustrating for fantasy owners.

Rangers | Six TEX hurlers vying for rotation spot

Sun, 08 Mar 2015 12:01:20 -0700

Texas Rangers SPs Nick Tepesch, Nick Martinez, Alex Gonzalez, Anthony Ranaudo, Lisalverto Bonilla and Ross Ohlendorf are expected to compete for the final spot in the team's starting rotation.

Fantasy Tip: SPs Derek Holland, Yovani Gallardo, Colby Lewis and Ross Detwiler are expected to have the top four spots in the rotation locked up, in the wake of the injury to Yu Darvish (elbow). At this point, it appears that none of the six starters competing for the final rotation spot has an edge over the others, so keep checking back between now and the end of spring training for further updates.
