Indians | Feller Rejects Radio Host's

Fri, 12 Aug 2005 22:04:18 -0700

Former Cleveland Indians SP Bob Feller said an interview with a St. Louis radio station Wednesday, Aug. 10 which ended with the host labeling him a racist misrepresents his views on baseball diversity, according to Andrew Logus and Bryce Miller of the Des Moines Register. When asked by Kevin Slaten, co-host of KFNS' "The Bottom Line" show about what's right and wrong with the game of baseball, part of Feller's response included the statement, "A lot of these players coming from the Caribbean, they don't even know the rules." When asked by the Register to clarify his remarks, Feller said part of the reason he thinks Caribbean players struggle to understand the rules is probably because of "a language problem." Mike Claiborne, co-host of the KFNS radio show, had also asked Feller to clarify his response, but the two argued until he hung up the phone after being called a racist. "I'm anything but a racist," Feller said. "I played with Hispanics and blacks and men of all races ever since I was a little boy out on the farm in Iowa. This fella wants to say I'm a racist - he's a liar."

"I object very strongly to Muhammad Ali being here to throw out the first pitch, and you can print that," Feller said in the Boston Herald.
